IPC to roll out the prototype system for analyzing chronic food insecurity

A comprehensive approach to end food insecurity

The IPC Global Partnership successfully concluded the 1st round of country pilots [October 2012 - February 2013] of the IPC prototype system for analyzing chronic food insecurity.  The 1st Synthesis Meeting  of the the IPC Global ‘Chronic Working Group’ took place from 11 to 14 March 2013  in Washington to review the main findings and develop improved prototype(s).

The 1st round of chronic pilot exercises started in 2012 and took place in Nepal (Oct.2012) and Philippines (Feb.2013); Lesotho, Malawi and Zimbabwe (Oct.-Nov. 2012); and Honduras (Jan. 2013). In each country, training and analysis workshops were conducted to introduce and apply the IPC prototype tools and procedures to analyze chronic food insecurity: analytical framework, reference table and analysis templates.

Feedback and lessons learned from country tests were presented and discussed at the 1st Synthesis Meeting to work towards developing improved prototype(s).

The development of the IPC chronic food insecurity scale aims at favoring multi-dimensional analysis of the food insecurity situation and therefore multi-dimensional response that addresses both short term and long term dimensions of food insecurity. Ultimately, this boosts inter-institutional collaboration on a number of food security related initiatives and provide the basis for an improved institutional environment for food security interventions.
